PUT A WOMAN IN CHARGE (written by Keb Mo and Beth Neilson Chapman)

Way back when, in the beginning of time

Man made the fire, then the wheel

Went from a horse to an automobile

He said the world is mine, he took the oceans and the sky

He set the borders, built the walls; he won’t stop ‘til he owns it all.

And here we are, standing on the brink of disaster

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH IS ENOUGH IS ENOUGH         (pause)          I know the answer.

Put a woman in charge (3x), put the women in charge (3x), put a woman in charge (3x), put the women in charge (3x)

The time has come, we’ve got to turn this world around (2x)

Call the mothers, call the daughters, we need the sisters of mercy now

She’ll be a hero, not a fool; she’s got the power to change the rules

She’s got something that men don’t have; she is kind and she understands

So let the ladies do what they were born to do

RAISE THE VIBRATION! And make a better place for me and you

Put a woman in charge (3x), put the women in charge (3x), put a woman in charge (3x), put the women in charge (3x)

HALLELUJAH! (3x)      We’re gonna feel the magic.     When the girls take over

IT’S GONNA BE FANTASTIC!!!!!       Put a woman in charge (12x) as above

Time to Put the Women in Charge!

With gratitude to Keb Mo for expressing so eloquently what I have been thinking for decades! If you have not yet seen his video, please check it out. If you have and you love it as much as I do, it might be time for another viewing!!

Women have so much to offer to our society, and leadership is one of our strong suits, so let’s lean into it!! Please join me in supporting as many of the courageous women running for Congress this year as you can possibly afford. These investments actually pay off in better policy decisions.

Of course some of our candidates will not win, but we should rally around them and help tip the scales. No one knows what will happen in this momentous election, so do not let polls (in either direction) interfere with your focus. We need to codify Roe, so we need to elect pro-choice candidates, especially WOMEN!

With that I present the complete list of candidates, 2024:

There are 106 non-incumbent pro-choice/Democratic women running for Congress on the House side this year; over half (54) are running in 14 states with an abortion ban. There are 12 in Florida alone! And 11 in TX, 6 in TN, and 5 in MO. Please support any and all so we can codify Roe and GSD!!

Raise the vibration!

Kamala’s candidacy is adding so much enthusiasm to this election, so perhaps it is not too much to hope that we can ride a pink wave into November and beyond!

When abortion is on the ballot it wins, so I want to focus on the states that have ballot initiatives and/or Constitutional amendments enshrining abortion on their ballots.

Florida activists met the signature threshold and voters will decide whether or not to enshrine the right to an abortion up until viability into the state Constitution. That should help get out the vote.

Please support the courageous Democratic challengers in Florida!

Ignore the list with dead links, and sorry about that.

Thank you, President Biden!

Wow. Hard to believe that today marks just 4 weeks since the nightmare-inducing debate between two old white men clinging to patriarchy, both convinced that they alone could save our nation.

Last night President Biden eloquently and humbly reminded us that no one person can save us; we have to do that as a team, together.

As you can probably guess, I am all in for Kamala!!!

Her candidacy is going to be a major boost for the many unsung Democratic women running for Congress all over the country!

In Texas there are eleven, ten of whom are challengers. In any other year I would not have much hope for any of them, but this year is proving to be a whole ‘nother thing.

It somehow doesn’t seem overly optimistic to think that we will flip some (many?) of these seats. So without further ado, here they are.

My heartfelt letter to Uncle Joe immediately following his terrifying debate performance.

My side hustle: letters to Biden

September 2023 Letter to Joe

It might look like my work at Half the Congress Should Be Women is strictly cyclical, according to electoral politics. It’s true that I cannot support non-incumbent women running for Congress very effectively until I know who’s running! Between elections I have taken up writing letters on my fun and fancy stationery to various and sundry folks, mostly politicians, mostly Joe Biden.

As I continue to fume over Biden’s handling of the war in Gaza, currently escalating far beyond, I have decided to share a letter I wrote to the president on September 19, 2023, about two and a half weeks before Hamas’ invasion of Israel sparked the genocide of Palestinians and the utter destruction of their land and infrastructure.

For the first time I included a book with my letter, Chris Hedges’ latest book, The Greatest Evil is War. It is a disturbing book, and yet I recommend it. War is nothing if not disturbing.

Click on the handwritten letter to read the full transcript.

Visibility Visits to Capitol Hill!

Off to Washington for Visibility Visits!

Women are rising like never before, with a renewed sense of “wokeness” to the dangers of patriarchy. On this Earth Day, when we honor our mother Earth, the source of all life and the treasures she provides us, let us acknowledge that the masculine energies around competition have brought us to this place of violence and scarcity. Capitalism allows the greedy to pillage our planet and wreak havoc on innocent communities.

Elon Musk’s recent space blast debacle epitomizes that dangerous masculine intrusion into our day-to-day lives. Imagine a feminine approach! We could be creating beautiful parks, gardens, and schools for our communities, providing healthcare for all: everybody in, nobody out.

To honor some of the many women in Congress who share my vision, I have purchased 50 mugs with the Half the Congress Should Be Women logo on both sides, and plan to distribute them to their offices on Capitol Hill on May 1 and 2. Please contact me if you are interested in helping me!!

That adds up to 49 mugs, and the 50th mug will go to Congressman Earl Blumenauer of Oregon for his unwavering support of women in politics. We need more members like him.

But most of all we need more women in Congress!! The inequality in that body is the status quo of patriarchy. Inertia. Cynicism. Go along to get along. A new era is dawning, and steadily we are making progress. Nothing happens overnight in the political world, so practicing patience helps a LOT!!

Resource to share: cute Roe Roe Roe your vote flyers

Based on my advice that we all need to step our activism up a notch, I helped design a flyer to share. Feel free to download and print these flyers, and distribute as widely as possible. Because they cost money to print, you don’t want to just hand them out randomly. Find a friendly locale so you can strike up conversations with sympathetic people. Ask for donations for your printing costs if necessary, and tell people that you can only give them a hard copy if they promise to donate to at least one candidate. Some folks just like to take pictures, which is great, but be sure they get a photo of the backside of the full size flyer, where the candidate names and websites are listed.

The half size flyer does not have the candidates listed on the back. They are a little more cost-effective. Best to give to people who express a true interest, who will actually follow through on donating. With just six more weeks until election day, and early voting starting soon, helping these candidates fund their Get Out the Vote efforts is essential. Pizza costs money, coffee costs money, gas costs money ~ you get the picture!!

Download and print whatever quantities make sense for you!! And thanks, Kate

Roe, Roe, Roe Your Vote

Okay people, here we go again, only this time the consequences of the upcoming midterm elections could not be more potentially dire. Yikes. Isn’t it incredible that nine people can have that much power?

Never forget, however, that last time I checked the ultimate power still rests in the power of the people when they get out and vote. And tell their friends and family to vote. And register members of their community to vote, particularly young voters who can sometimes feel intimidated by the system. Their futures are on the line so they will welcome your help.

Don’t let me down, fellow feminists! If we don’t pull it together for this Fall’s midterm elections, we can kiss our reproductive rights goodbye, and say farewell to our democracy while we’re at it.

If you live in one of the following districts, it is not too late to get active in support of a pro-choice candidate, or even several. If your district is not listed, please please please help out somewhere else. Donate, contact friends and relatives, particularly in crucial states such as Florida and North Carolina. When women rise we are powerful. Even states like Iowa and Alaska are in play this year, due to the unconscionable Dobbs decision.

Here is our chance to say a huge F U to patriarchy!! Non-incumbent female candidates are at an extreme disadvantage, so we really must show our support with financial donations if at all possible. Campaigns cost money. Male allies, you have been making more than we women for decades, so please show that you truly care by choosing a candidate or two, going to their website, and pulling out your credit card. Now is the time!!!!!

In states like Alabama and Tennessee women’s voices need to be uplifted, bigly. Entrenched incumbents think they can continue on their ego-driven rides, but their time is up. Let 2022 be the year when women and our allies recognize the need to jump into politics, a messy business. It’s kinda like cleaning the toilets. Not your favorite job, but absolutely necessary for a functioning House (and a filibuster-free Senate).

Kudos to CA-37, where two pro-choice women are running against each other! The asterisk signifies an open seat, which is typically slightly easier to win. Incumbents have a huge advantage. A few districts have must-beat incumbents. Those are CA-20 (Kevin McCarthy), FL-01 (Matt Gaetz), and PA-10 (Scott Perry). Another incumbent who really needs to be retired is almost 89 year-old Chuck Grassley, Republican Senator from Iowa since before his opponent Abby Finkenauer was born! Adios, Kevin, Matt, Scott and Chuck. We can do better!

Katie Porter’s Truth to Power PAC weighs in

I reached out to all the women who won in 2018, reminding them that I played a role in their success, including all the members of the Squad, and they are all doing amazing electoral work in 2020. Some are having to defend their seats quite aggressively. One of them stands out to me as a person who can keep all the balls in the air, and that is Katie Porter, who won a seat in Republican territory, Orange County, CA, and is going to keep it because she is such an impressive person, someone with a brilliant mind combined with a caring heart. She can win her seat while crafting legislation that will move us toward our goal of health and prosperity for all, and support a great slate of candidates to further these goals all the while. Katie has endorsed 28 non-incumbent candidates to join her in Congress and transform our society. As one KP to another, I am proud to share Katie Porter’s 28 Truth to Power-endorsed candidates, 22 of whom are women. Not sure what the order is, but no matter. Here they are:

Carolyn Bourdeaux (GA-07)
Cori Bush (MO-01)
Theresa Greenfield (IA-SEN)
Betsy Dirksen-Londrigan (IL-13)
Ben Ray Luján (NM-SEN)
Julie Oliver (TX-25)
Gina Ortiz Jones (TX-23)
Desiree Tims (OH-10)
Cameron Webb (VA-05)
Kathleen Williams (MT-AL)
Tedra Cobb (NY-21)
Wendy Davis (TX-21)
Michelle De La Isla (KS-02)
Beth Doglio (WA-10)

Note that Kathleen Williams and Alyse Galvin are in states (MT and AK) that have only one House rep, which could make a huge difference if the election outcome hinges on Constitutional issues. Women everywhere, even in conservative states like Montana and Alaska, arise! We can change the world. Texas, you too are welcome to join the movement for a livable future. Five of these candidates are from the Lone Star State, hallelujah.

Hats off to New York for fielding three of the six men. That is commendable!!
